Surprisingly enough, Vertigo released
more singles on the European continent than in Britain. As far as we
know, all of these were issued in a picture sleeve. Every country page
within this site has some fine examples of those, have a look!
Especially in Germany, many singles saw the light of day. We have seen
German copies of all singles that were released in Britain, save 6059
051 (Freedom), though that doesn't mean it does not exist, of course.

Example
of Austrian label with both ''Austro Mechana'' and ''Made in Austria''.
|
The first few singles were released (as with the albums) with B-side
styled labels on both sides. The full swirl A-side label was adopted
later. White label promos were issued. They sported the same picture
sleeve as the regular issues did. The back side of the sleeves
advertised for newly released Phonogram albums or singles.
All swirl singles were released in STEREO in Germany. The matrix
numbers are built up quite logically. 10 AA 6059001 1W 320 for the
first release, where ''10 AA'' is an internal code in use on the albums
also, next the catalogue number ''6059001'', then the side ''1'' and
''W'' for stereo, finally ''320'' for the country of Germany.
The first two singles (in Britain V1 and V2) received the catalogue
numbers 6059 001 and 6059 002 respectively.
Austrian singles are spread among the German ones.

It is very well possible, that there were more singles released in
Germany that weren't in Britain. If anyone out there knows of any,
please contact us!
And,
as promised, a nice bunch of picture sleeves to gaze at in numerical
order (not
necessarily only from the above non-Brtitish ones, of course).
